Kaprun's major off-slope attraction is its swimming and leisure complex, Optimum, which incorporates a leisure pool as well as a heated outdoor pool, Turkish bath, whirl pool and three saunas. Services available include sun beds and lamps, solariums, massage, pedicure, and you can even rent your bathing costume if you forget to bring one. There's a bowling alley on Schlossstrasse, tennis courts, a small library at the information centre and a local folk museum near the church. Outside there's a natural ice rink. You can sometimes go ballooning, try paragliding, horse riding, take a sleigh ride, or have fun on the illuminated toboggan run (2.5km/1.5 miles). Over in Zell am See there is ice sailing and ice surfing on Lake Zell when frozen. In the air there's a choice of scenic flights in light aircraft, gliding, paragliding, hang gliding, even parachuting. Zell's indoor ice rink stages hockey and curling matches as well as skating. There's an indoor riding school, sleigh rides, even llama riding in Kaprun! The multi sports centre has indoor pool, sauna and solarium, and there's also a beauty farm, bowling, a cinema, library and museum in the town. Concerts, exhibitions, festivals and theatre in the castle are staged, there are also art galleries. If you still feel there's not enough to do off the slopes locally, many excursions are organised from the town, with popular destinations including the thermal springs of the Gastein Valley (see Bad Gastein or Bad Hofgastein), the ice cave at Werfen, the salt mines at Hallein, Europe's highest waterfalls at Krimml and the provincial capital of Salzburg.
